Part 1: Earthquake Survival Kits (My amended version)

How to Survive an Earthquake (My amended version)
in our hdb flat

WHAT TO DO
in facing >7 mag of earthquake , a deadly earthquake (Highlight in RED)

PREPARE YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY NOW

* Have an earthquake survival kit on hand.
there is no time to grab that. drop it

* All family members should know how to turn off gas, water, and electricity.
stay away from that will do ... there is no reason to turn off on purpose , hit your main circuit breaker to switch off. we should invest a good circuit breaker * Plan family emergency procedures, and make plans for reuniting your family.
agree

* Know emergency telephone numbers (doctor, hospital, police, 911, etc)
agree

* Anchor heavy objects to walls (bookcases, wall units, mirrors, cabinets, etc.)
don't waste effort doing that , just run away from it

* Never place heavy objects over beds, and keep heavy objects lower than head height of shortest member of family.
agree

* Added in myself : a 2 steps emergency react procedure
i think emergency react procedure should always keep short and simple
my react procedure :run or hide. if your
emergency procedure that long and you panic , would you remember a thing... i myself don't ..

DURING AN EARTHQUAKE STAY CALM

* Inside, stand in doorway, or crouch under a desk or table, well away from windows or glass dividers.
well will it works to sustain the tons of loads failing from the top?.. this is not going to work in HDB flat .. i rather run .... if no way to run , then we must hide.. hide where... choice 1:
fridge (opps for 1 person only , and you fridge must be huge , however hiding there pose a problem - " no air " ) , choice2 :under dinning table ( nowadays table not as sturdy as before , you only risk your life hiding there) , choice 3: our bomb shelter (it's made out of solid metal in and out , but how abt the top and bottom , is it metal also ? we have to find out . Even if the shelter prove solid.. you likely to smack by the things you packed in the shelter..... so my conclusion , if you can't run out of it to a safe area, then the possibility to survive from the quake and the failing tops is 1 to 0.05%
, so grab each others and run !!!!

* Outside, stand away from buildings, trees, telephones and electrical lines.
totally agree.... run to a open field to be exact.

* On the road, drive away from underpasses and overpasses; stop in safe area; stay in vehicle.
totally agree.... drive to a open field to be exact.

AFTER AN EARTHQUAKE , you survived !! you are in the 1 to 0.05% pie
btw,
1% pie -> are those who survived but unfortuately trapped
0.05% pie -> are those who survived and where you successfully run away from it .

* Check for injuries-provide first aid.
provided you are in the 0.05% pie not hurted and trapped

* Check for safety-check for gas, water, sewage breaks; check for downed power lines and shorts; turn off appropriate utilities.
provided your flat still stood there

* Check for building damage and potential problems during aftershocks.
provided your flat still stood there

* Clean up dangerous spills.
provided your flat still stood there

* Wear shoes
provided your flat still stood there

* Turn on the radio and listen for instructions from public safety agencies.
* Use telephone for emergencies, only.
provided you are not hurted and trapped, would it be a good thing to grab hold your mobile phone . especially your phone has built-in radio

AFTER AN EARTHQUAKE , you survived !! unforunately you are in the 1% pie ..
you are trapped.

* you must keep yourself warm and alive to last 120hrs , while waiting for rescue team to help you out.
this is a tricky part, to survive the 120hrs , the things you grab with with you and the hideout you pick during the quake and before the cave in , determine how well you can last thru the hours of waiting.
